"Sri Krishna is an avatar of God", or
he assumes the body with a purpose. Still there should be a reason
for Him to leave the body and the reason came as the hunter. There
is another story behind the hunter. Hunter in his previous birth
was Bali whom Sri Krishna killed as Sri Rama, and in this birth
that account got settled thro' hunter's reaction.
Regarding the death of Krishna, He never dies, so do we. The difference
is that we are bound by the karmic action, where as He is not. He knows
His past, whereas we don't. So, in a way, you can see that Krisha gave
the opportunity for the hunter to react to His action in His previous
birth.
Hope I tried to answer your question.
