Avatar means descend, descend from an elevated state to a bodily
state. In that way, we all avatarred once in the begining of our
long yatra(journey), not any more, because now we are bound by our
Karmic bondage. In the case of Sri Krishna, this avatar took place
at that particular birth, so He is refered as an Avatar at that
birth.

Probably this explains why we don't remember our past, whereas the
ones with higher levels of consciousness remember.
