Be mindful of me, and I will be mindful of you.
Qur'an 2.152
Any reader of the Net soon discovers that admirers and carpers of Sri
Sathya Sai Baba both love to spread tales about him. Thus it might be
prudent, _before_ passing on any story, to first confirm the tale
oneself. In striving to do just that, the moment a tale is told to me, I
ask if the teller knows that as fact first hand, and if not, where it was
heard or read. I then seek out two witnesses who themselves observed the
event, seeing if they agree on all the details. If such evidence and
agreement is lacking, one might regard such tales as fables.
When a story cannot be traced to its origin, but appears to have
merit or urgency, Swami is asked directly to confirm or deny a tale.
However, devotees do not run to ask if the sky is falling.
Swami has unfortunately of late been ascribed as saying this and that
terrible event is about to erupt. Please do not take such stories to
heart. In the twenty years I have know Sai, I have never heard Swami make
any predictions of destruction. In every case where such stories have
spread, in every single case where it was alleged that Swami `said doom is
coming' (and I have heard stories that he `said' earthquakes, volcanoes,
atomic wars, market crashes, etc. were about to erupt) those words of doom
and gloom have proven to be a fantasy. Sadly some persons seem to repeat
(and embellish) fearful tales, as if the roller coaster rush of impending
disaster were fun. I guess some folks actually wish to hear such things.
At any rate, please note that stories of death, destruction, despair- are
not in any wise like Sai. Still, any rumour that spreads genuine concern
among devotees is always brought directly to Swami's attention. In every case
thus far, he has said the stories are nonsense.
Of course that was then, this is now. The current tale, spread unfortunately
for the most part by those who say they admire Swami, is that the market
is going kaboom in Japan. As of Wednesday, Swami has not been asked to
confirm or deny that story, since devotees by and large do not listen to
such gossip.
Is the market really going to crash? I do not know. But I do know that Sri
Sathya Sai Baba is not in the business of predicting such things.
I sense the story is being spread by those who wish to appear to have the
inside scoop on the future, and so do spread stories that Sai forecast
this or that. Even when they are nonsense, fables can be quite
entertaining; however, fables can as easily make for hurtful gossip as
well as for hagiographic hyperbole. Thus, the sincere aspirant of
spiritual insight does well to distinguish between fable and fact, and
does better to make sure the speaker and the listener(s) knows if they are
hearing made-up stories, or solid scripture.
Please, disregard tales of Sai speaking of doom and gloom. The person who
says `Why fear when I am here?' does not proclaim predictions of horror.
All best wishes
