Gary,
You are right that many people favour the closed universe because of
the creation from nothing problem. There is still a problem with that. The
problem is with the singularity. At the singularity all physical laws fail.
So it is not justified to go beyond the singularity. The concepts of space and
time do not exist at a singularity.
