Orthodox Vedanta teaches that karma is beginningless,
i.e., anAdi. Since the individual self is also uncreated
and without a beginning, it is due to this beginningless
karma that the self is still enmeshed in samsAra. Only
through surrender to the Supreme Lord (parabrahman) can
this karma be overcome.
As far as your question concerning mAyA and how it deludes the
individual into ignorance, this is a ontological feature
of only one of the schools of Vedanta, i.e., advaita. That
being the case, it is best if I let an advaitin answer that
question.
