Marriage is an obligation because Dharma cannot be practised without it.
Jnana is completely seperate from Dharma so a whole seperate set of rules
apply. Although (particularly in the South) there is a tradition of
Balasannyasa (Sannyasa from childhood) the majority view is one should
become an ascetic towards the end of ones life after family obligations
have been met.
Certainly in the popular mindset a person who abandoned his wife and
children to become a monk would be nothing but an object of derision.
