: They perform a variety of rituals, but dont know the meaning of them. When I
: ask them 'why do you do this?' they reply 'our parents told us to do so'.

: As a result of this, I stopped beliving in Hinduism.
Congratulations, that makes it two of us and I am with you.

: Is there anyone out there that can point me to a page (or other
: reference) explaining Hinduism, and the reasons why various ceremonies are
: performed?
It is an infinite ocean and cannot be fully explained in a limited time.
Go to any search engine (preferably altavista or yahoo) and type the word
Hindu or Hindu god.
You will endup with some interesting sites.

: Here are two of the recent questions I have asked them... and not got
: satisfying answers:

: What is the significance of Diwali.
Dinesh, have you ever wondered why Indians celebrate festivals.
The social and the cultural significance behind them?

: During Diwali Puja - What is the point of washing silver coins of the
: goddess laxmi in milk, adding some 'mithai', 'sindoor', etc...etc...
I will send this portion in mail.
(It is a little bit detailed so I am skipping it here)

: Why do we need so many Gods? What are their functions?
Why are there other headache medicines when there is Tylenol.
Because the heads are different. And different medicine suites for different
people. I wouldn't force every one to use the same medicine for all headaces.
Will I? Or will You?
There are different philosophies about God in Hinduism.
I am sure you will get to know about them if you did your homework of
reading the websites which you will get by searching on the internet.
You are talking about Dvita philosophy(partially).
The big boss needs some assistants, doesn't he.
See IBM. It doesn't have a well organised divisions depending upon the
functionality. It soon lost control over the market.
Hindus were different. They had very good planning and organization.
It reflects in the concept of their gods.

: Is Sai Baba a God?
Strictly personal. But for me he is God.

: What is God according to Hindus?
If I knew that I wouldn't be wasting my time here.:-)
But the question which baffles me is who is God rather then What is God.
Dinesh, if things confuse you don't run away from them. If truth baffles
you don't get scared.
Dive into it, get your own experience, seek the truth and you shall get it.
One thing I can say is there is truth in hinduism. The thing I can't say
yet is What is this truth. The day I will break it, I will defintely
share with you.
meanwhile, search for the truth yourself and enlighten ignorants like me
who are seeking the truth.

: Have a nice day,
regards,
-- Prasad
