Summer Intensive Courses
at
TARPON SPRINGS CAMPUS
(Tampa, Florida)
Four courses are scheduled as follows. Each course will be taught for
approximately 6 hours every day except the first course, which will be
taught for approximately 3 hours on each of the weekdays evenings and for
approximately 6 hours on each of the weekend days and on July 4, 1996. In
addition to the instructions for the courses, arrangements will be made for
other activities like Hatha Yoga and Meditation sessions as well as
informal spiritual discussions for the interested participants, all at no
extra cost.
1. Principles of Hinduism (Prof. Pundrik C. Mehta)
June 29 (Sat) - July 7 (Sun), 1996
2. Patanjali's Yoga Darshana (Prof. Yog D. Ahuja)
July 8 (Mon) - July 14 (Sun), 1996
3. Basic Sanskrit (Prof. Adolf von Wurttemberg)
July 15 (Mon) - July 20 (Sat), 1996
4. Hindu Architecture (Prof. Deepak Bakshi)
July 21 (Sun) - July 27 (Sat), 1996
Full participation in any of these courses and the follow-up interaction
with the instructor(s) by correspondence can earn 3 credits (for each
course) towards Master of Hindu Studies degree from Hindu University of
America. Credits for these courses may be transferable to other

COURSE FEES: Tuition $150 per course, and $25 one-time enrollment fee with
Hindu University. (Cost of text-books is not included in these fees but all
other handouts of classnotes are covered.)
Registration deadline: May 29, 1996. (University reserves the right to
cancel any course if sufficient enrollment is not received).
A block of rooms has been reserved at Days Inn for course participants at a
very special discount rate of $20.00 per night per room (with two double
beds). This special rate is available for reservations confirmed through
May 29, 1996 and only if you mention 'HU Intensive Courses' while making

Descriptions of Courses and Introductions to Faculty
1. Principles of Hinduism by Prof. Pundrik C. Mehta
June 29 (Sat.) - July 7 (Sun.), 1996. (Hindu University Course HUC5003 - 3
credits)
This is a core course for Hindu University students and provides an
overview of Hinduism, theories of Karma and reincarnation, six schools of
Hindu philosophies including Vedanta and Yoga. Extensive course notes will
be made available to participants as handouts. Instructor: Professor
Pundrik C. Mehta was the first professor to join Hindu University and has
been teaching this course to HU students since 1993. An attorney and
barrister by training, Prof. Mehta has studies Hindu philosophy, theosophy,
Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, etc. for last fifty years. Follower of Sri
Anandmayi Ma, he has been writing and lecturing widely on related topics.
2. Patanjali's Yoga Darshana by Prof. Yog D. Ahuja
July 8 (Mon.) - July 14 (Sun.), 1996 (Hindu University Course YMP5001 - 3
credits)
This course is design to study the basic principles of Yoga system as
propounded in Patanjali's Yoga Darshana. Background understanding of the
twin, Samkhya philosophy is included. The course will analyze Yama and
Niyama as personal and Social disciplines; the importance of Asanas, the
Yoga postures; and the value and relevance of Pratyahara, the control of
sense activities. This part covers the "outer circle" and is followed by an
evaluation of the "inner circle" consisting of concentration, meditation
and Samadhi. Texts used: 1. Raja Yoga by Swami Vivekananda (Ramakrishna
Vivekananda Center, New York); and 2. A Study of Patanjali by Dr. S. N.
Dasgupta (Motilal Banarsidas, New Delhi). Instructor: Dr. Yog Dhyan Ahuja
is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Metro State College, Denver
(Colorado). He has been associated closely with Hindu University project
and has contributed significant to planning of the current academic
programs at HU.
3. Basic Course in Sanskrit by Prof. Adolf von Wurttemberg
July 15 (Mon.) - July 20 (Sat.), 1996. (Hindu University Course HUC5003 - 3
credits)
This course provides students with basic elementary and practical knowledge
of Sanskrit, alphabet and phonetics, grammar and syntax, formation and
understanding of simple sentences, common Sanskrit terms used in Hindu
literature, relationship with other languages. Text used: Judith M.
Tyberg,"FIRST LESSONS IN SANSKRIT GRAMMAR AND TEACHING", Los Angeles: East
India Cultural Center, 1964. ISBN 0-930-736-01-X Audio cassettes will be
made available to help the students with Sanskrit pronunciation.
Instructor: Dr. Adolf von Wurttemberg is a professor of Sanskrit at Emory
University. He has a Ph. D. degree from University of Antwerp, Belgium. He
has also taught Sanskrit courses at Vedanta Society and various
other study groups. He teaches this Sanskrit course to Hindu University
students via correspondence.
4. Hindu Architecture by Prof. Deepak Bakshi
July 21 (Sun) - July 27 (Sat), 1996.(Hindu University Course HIN6101-
Selected topics in Hinduism - 3 credits)
This course provides students with complete understanding and knowledge of
applications of Hindu Architecture based on Sthapatya veda. This course is
designed for individuals who have ability to understand and interpret house
design, plans and elevations, and can guide a designer to design a house.
Persons with a minimum degree in Architecture or interior design, student
studying architecture or interior design, building contractors, real estate
developers will find the course material useful for their professional
activities. Extensive course notes will be provided as handouts.
Instructor: Professional Architect Deepak Bakshi is a partner in Lotus
Environmental Design & Build Inc. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in
Architecture, Diploma in Architecture from the University of Westminister
in London, UK. He is practicing Architecture and Vedic Architecture since
last seventeen years in UK and USA . He has designed several residential,
commercial buildings and Hindu temples.
