Misinformation on Hinduism
Namasthe:
I stumbled onto the IndiaMystica CD which has
information about Hinduism. In it there were quite a
few things which I found to be pretty misleading.
I would like to get feedback and suggestions from the
people on SRH on what can be done about it.
1. They say that the Bhagavad Gita was probably
written by some unknown Brahmin ( How qualified is
India mystica to come to some arbitrary conclusion
about the jaath of a unknown person ?? ). Would
they have the guts to write something similiar
about Islam or Christianity.
2. They also say that the Gita was written around
300AD and it could have been Sri Shankaracharya who
wrote it.
- It is very well known that the language in the
Gita is pre-puranic age. Also it is known because of
the Guru-Shishya parampara a lot of texts were
written down only much later even though they were
handed down generations by Gurus to their
disciples. By leaving out this critical piece of
information, the India mystica people misinform
their readers. Also, this is the first time that I
have seen anywhwhere that Sri Shankaracharya could
have been its author.
3. They also say that Sri Krishna advises that a
persons varna is decided at birth. This is totally
untrue because in the Gita, Krishna says a person
belongs to a particular caste depending on his/her
Gunas.
However later the loose caste system degenerated into
the present day caste system becauseof the monopoly of
brahmins.
This kind of misinformation to children growing up in
the US who are trying to find out more about the Hindu
Dharma is really a disgrace.
There is a lot more misionformation in the CD, which
I am currently planning on going through in detail.
For those of you who are interested, you can look in
the India world web page - http://www.indiaworld.com
and look up a bit of IndiaMystica.
It looks like the IndiaMystica people have culled
information about Hinduism from books writen by
western authors and not bothered to look at books by
Indian philosophers and thinkers like Dr.
Radhakrishan and Sri Rajagopalachari or at
publications by organizations like Chinmaya Mission or
Ramakrishna mission.
We all should identify the mistakes and request the
people of IndiaMystica to correct it.
Your feedback is welcome
