upanisads upanishads upanishhads ....
Namaste :
Recently there have been some discussion on the upanisads available
in the USA. I hope the following information will help atleast a few.
As always, comments and additions are welcome.
The three popular books are :
'principal upanisads' by radhakrishna - 18
'thirty minor upanisads' by aiyer - 30
'sixty upanisads of the veda' by duessen -60
{This is not counting the numerous commentaries and translations of the
principal upanisads by so many people}
Ideally, these books should cover the 108 upanisads (given in the muktika
upanisad, 1:30-39). It does not.
Thus we have the six volume series published by the Adyar
Library with the commentary of upanisad-brahmayogin (who is said
to be the only person who has commented on 108 upanisads).
The six volumes are titled :
sakta upanisads
saiva upanisads
vaisnava upanisads
yoga upanisads
samnyasa upanisads
samanya-vedanta upanisads
which is supposed to cover all the minor upanisads.
All the above books are available in the USA.
There are also books which cover all the 108 upanisads. For example, the
one published by Tukaram in Bombay (1913) covers all of them. There is
another book called '112 upanisads' published by Parimal publishers, Delhi
in 1987 and translated by bhattacharya, but i have not looked at it.
I am sure the Motilal Publishers in Delhi published a volume set of
all upanishads though the name of the book escapes me at the moment.
