Sometime ago, we were discussing a verse from the Ishopanishad:
asuryA nAma te loka andhena tamasAvR^itAH
taMste pretyAbhigacchanti ye ke chAtmohano janaH. 3
In this verse, if you remember the reference to 'Atmahanan' was a puzzle.
I find this verse in the Srimad Bhagavad that clearly describes who these
people are.
ye kaivalyamsamprAptA ye chAtItAscha mUDatAm.h
traivargikA hyakshanikA AtmAnaM ghAtayanti te. 11.5.16
Those who have not recieved knowledge (ye kaivalyaM asamprAptA) but
gone beyond the ignorance (muDatAM cha atItA) always busy in
traivargic affairs (traivargikA akshaNikA), they are killing themselves
(AtmAnaM ghAtayanti te).
eta Atmahano.ashAntA aGYAne GYAnamAninaH
sIdantakR^itakR^ityA vai kAladhvastamanorathAH. 11.5.17
Aiming for decayable things (kAladhvasta manorathAH), thinking of
ignorance as knowledge (aGYAne GYAnamAninaH), such irrepressible suicidals
(eta AtmahanaH ashAntAH) falls into failures (sIdanti akR^itakR^ityA).
hitvAtmamAyArachitA gR^ihApatyasuhR^icchriyaH
tamo vishantyanichhantyo vAsudevaparAN^mukhAH. 11.5.18
(They being) uninterested in vAsudeva (vAsudevaparaN^mukhA), (but taken
by) his own selfish emotional world (AtmamAyArachitaH) of home, friends, wife
(gR^ihApatyasuhR^itstriyaH) although unwilling, enters into darkness (hitvA
tamaH vishanti anicchantaH).
These three verses appear to me to be just the commentary for the
Ishapanishadic verse. The suicide therefore is continuing in the
self-glorification for having attained the proverbial 'little learning'.
