Why the good are not spared...

Someone recently posted a question asking why, when there is a
calamity, the good suffer along with the bad. The example of the Jews
suffering under Hitler was given. The following is an extract from one
of my Teacher's discourses which will help explain that subject.

--------------------
...This life is only a reflection of the Real Life. This world is
not real world, yet it is a tremendous school, it is a necessity. It is
said that the Lord Himself sacrificed the greatest sacrifice by
becoming this great universe; everywhere is He. Now the task, the goal
of our life, this very strange, imperfect life, is to transcend the
pairs of opposites and to come to the One Imperishable who is within us
as well as outside us. It is easy to say, but it is the uphill work and
very honourable and very beautiful, and the only way out of this
difficult and unhappy existence here.
I will tell you concretely why I speak about it, because, in
spite of all my transmissions, there are many of you who do not catch
the ball, and especially those who hear various rumours about the end
of this world and about the calamities which are threatening us and who
are depressed about it and think that they have to quickly do something
about it. Well, this is the most naive, the most materialistic, the
most ridiculous attitude. I will tell you that the Revelations of St.
John, upon whom all the modern Western ""prophets"" (in double quotes
and triple quotes... [Smiling] ...well, about which they are shouting
at the top of their voice - the Revelations of John are true, but the
prophets are false. Further they are so ignorant and so limited that
they do not know that, for instance, the Bhagavad Gita spoke about it a
thousand years before John.
What does this mean precisely? It means, my Children, that the
Omnipresent and Omnipotent and the superb Lord of the Universe allows
those things for some purpose. It also means that you will do nothing
at all profitable to yourself and to others if you will start now
experimental work on solar energy, trying to take precautions, if you
will plant the big orchards in order to prevent the coming starvation;
if you will do whatever, you won't save yourself and you won't save
anybody because everything is already. You cannot change an iota.
I was extremely amused and a little bit embarrassed and a little
bit touched yesterday, when I was listening to the Baptist Church
service. And the good priest spoke things which were not at all bad, he
was very... he was a gentleman and he spoke English well and he knew
his job, but spiritual he was not, even in the least. So among many
other things, finally, he spoke not an anecdote, but a great story,
great for him and for his listeners, and for everybody, really -
dramatic story about the mountain crushing and crumbling into the lake
in some Italian village (I don't know, he didn't mention when it was,
maybe some of you know), and it's horrible. And he said, "Well
everybody knows the why of it! The virtuous are saved and the sinners
are punished. This little town was destined to perish because of the
sinners there, it was a sinful town. And do you know what?!" he added
with great pathos, "There were two people who survived. They were
tourists and they belong to my church!" [Laughter] Well, I got a real
kick out of that. So the two tourists of this good padre - they did
survive.
May I refer now to the Bhagavad Gita. You all studied it and you
all must remember when the Lord speaks about the two Natures. And He
says that there is the lower Nature and there is the higher Nature, not
only in the Cosmos and in the outside world but in human being also.
The Divine Principle of our life is Krshna Himself (if you are more
comfortable with the Name Christ - call this Principle Christ!). But
now I am quoting Krshna who says that His Supreme Nature is the Eternal
Spirit and the transcended Nature, or Para Prakriti. It means that the
Essence of our being is the Divine Sakti, not the inferior Maya.
Further, the Lord declares that He is the birth of the whole world and
also its dissolution. And... the Supreme Nature is the Eternal Sakti of
the Lord. We all can turn to the highest Law of our own Souls.
Well, all those calamities, all those horrible things, - they are
not the only things in this world. There are lovely things also. There
is sweetness and there is Lakshmi aspect. The world goes parallelly.
But the purpose of the destruction is not just to destroy the village
which is sinful, but to transcend all the life and to remind that the
lower nature has to be sublimated. That is the only way. So apparently
(and this is rather obvious in Hinduism and very vague in the Western
prophesies and Western expositions of Truth) - apparently the Lord has
within Himself the aspect of destruction also. There is necessity for
it in His tremendous plan, and you can do absolutely nothing about it,
except one thing - to transcend your lower nature and to go into the
higher nature. This is your only job - not to prevent the cataclysms
which you cannot do. And if you are sufficiently wise and observing
this life, you must admit that every single moment there is some
tragedy. Even the fact that we are crushing hundreds of ants and other
creatures - for them is just as tragic as for you your cataclys
ms. So apparently, the lower nature is cruel, is without sequence and
without any wisdom; it is the defective nature.
It is necessary for some plan of the Lord, for to blame it on
Satan is rather naive. And I think Hinduism is the only religion which
does not blame it on the semi-omnipotent creature, Monsieur Satan. No.
There is a Cosmic Battle and there is the necessity of the
transcendence of the lower nature. If you transcend the lower nature by
your higher nature, you then fuse with the Supreme Truth. The Lord in
His Wisdom planned these two Natures for some very magnificent Cosmic
purpose. One nature is perishable, ignorant and defective, and another
is sublime. And the sublime nature is acting through the Sattwic guna.
Now if you are transcended through the sublime nature, you are
becoming imperishable; you are transcending the defective world and you
are attaining what Christ called "Salvation" and what the Hindu
Scriptures called "Moksha" and what Buddha called "Nirvana." In other
words, you are raising above all the pairs of opposites, all our
sweetness and all our bitterness, all our smiles and all our fears, all
those cataclysms which are horrible but which are everyday en
miniature. Everywhere something is crushed, there is not a single
moment that we are not crushing something. Somebody survives and
something is perishing. Well, this is this Wind of the world. A
nd you can transcend it and this is your salvation, not just to protect
yourself from the coming some kind of a calamity which is inevitable, I
am telling you that. And there are periods when it is more inevitable
than other periods. This Kali Yuga is now in its climax and is now
giving way to the more harmonious era, not at all the final goal and
not at all the final conclusion of this evolution, but just an
evolutionary step forward. We are approaching the more Sattwic Cycle -
many people call it "Aquarian Age," others call it "Golden Age" it is
all a lot of belle lettres, very novelistic. But the fact is that there
are cycles and that we are approaching a harmonious cycle. Okay.
Therefore, the disharmonies now are accelerated.
Now your salvation is not in building the fortresses. You are
stupid if you think so. How can you do something against the already
what IS?! If Arjuna, who was much more virtuous than an ordinary man,
could do nothing but just take his bow and arrow and follow the
directions of the Lord and fight in spite of the tremendous pain of his
heart, then what can you do really?! Yet you can do, and that's what It
speaks through' me now. You can raise yourself through this higher
Nature of yours and reach the proximity of your own Spirit. Forget
about the Hierarchy of Light; you yourself are Hierarchy of Light.
Reach your own Light, then you are joining the Hierarchy of Light
everywhere. But you cannot do anything if you are in darkness yourself.
It is, you by your own effort! Here is the Lord Buddha's motto and bow
to the earth to Him! He says that He came only to show you the way, but
the effort, the Right Effort, is sincer-r-r-ely yours! It is by your
own effort that you are transcending all the lower nature. And that is
what is called Salvation! Not to prevent the any kind of disaster of
the defective world which is all the time fluctuating, to transcend
yourself to such an extent that the defective world will not touch you
because you will be liberated from it. That's all!
