Actually, the word mantra means "to subdue the mind". Not to be nit
picky, but I think the word 'mantra' itself explains what it's importance
is. :) But I agree that there is more to a mantra that just the power of
suggestion. Sound has a profound influence on the mind...which is where
the emphasis of most, if not all, Eastern religions is put. That's not to
completely discount the fact that semantics have a role. I'm sure it
does. But sounds have other influences as well. If you listen to an Enya
CD, it has a certain effect on you, even if you can't make out the lyrics.
If you listen to a 2 Unlimited CD, it will have a different type of
effect. Mantra seems to work on different levels of mind simultaneously.
At least that is my experience with it.
