The opinions on the power of manthras would differ whether they 
are really powerful or not.  A devout hindu would like to say that
they indeed have magic powers. On the other hand, from the 
Advaitic point of view, you are already
that(Brahman) and you are the almighty powerful, only that the
apparent self(jeevatma) does not realise its power. The manthras,
if you look from this perspective, can be seen as an apparent means
for you realise your own power if you chant them with the right
consciousness and faith in its power. At a superficial level, whether 
you have faith or not, it does have some soothing effect on the 
mind, I believe this has more to do with the melody or vibrations 
associated with the chanting. I would like to share your thoughts 
on manthras from the advaitic point of view.
