MEMORIAL SERVICES TO BE HELD IN US
FOR REVERED SWAMI SHRADDHANANDAJI
July 22, 1996
With deep sorrow we announce the passing away of Revered Swami
Shraddhanandaji Maharaj, Minister-in-charge and Teacher of the Vedanta
Society of Sacramento. He was 89 years old. The end came at 8:45 p.m. on
19th July, 1996. He was suffering from congestive heart failure and,
towards the end, renal failure also. On July 4th he had a spell of
unconsciousness for about half an hour. Since then, the condition of his
health steadily deteriorated.
Revered Swami Shraddhanandaji Maharaj was a senior sannyasin of the
Ramakrishna Order of India.
A funeral service was held on the Society's premises on the morning of the
20th. According to the wishes of the Swami, the body was wiped with Ganges
water and dressed in a new set of ochre clothes. Then it was laid on a
special bier and decorated with flowers and garlands. The bier was carried
by pall bearers and placed in the auditorium, where devotees and friends
paid their last respects mid chanting. After an hour, pall bearers carried
the bier to the Garden of the Saints, the retreat area in the back of the
property. A procession of devotees and friends followed, participating in
the chanting of divine names and verses. Finally, the body was brought back
to the Swami's room. From there, a hearse carried it to the funeral home
for cremation.
A special worship service will be performed on Wednesday, July 31st at
7:30 p.m., in the Society's Chapel. On Sunday, August 4th at 11:00 a.m., a
memorial service will be held in the auditorium. Swamis-in-charge of the
different Vedanta Societies in the US and Canada are invited to take part
in the memorial service. All devotees and friends are cordially invited
to participate in both the functions.
