Inauguration of Keshav Smriti in Houston, Texas, USA
News Release: For Immediate Release
Prepared by Beth Kulkarni, (713) 467-3022
Wednesday, July 31, 1996, will be remembered as a very significant day for
Hindus in the Houston area. Keshav Smruti, in southwest Houston, was dedicated
with a pooja with Shri Rajaratna Bhattar presiding and Ramesh and Kiran Bhutada
participating on behalf of the community. Over 200 persons were in attendance
and invited to join in repeating the Sanskrit shlokas to Lord Ganesha.
Shri Madandasji Devi, Joint General Secretary of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak
Sangh (RSS) in India, was present for the inauguration. In his brief talk he
stated that eco-balance can be solved by the Hindu way of life. When we see
God, we can coexist not only with our fellow human beings, but also with nature
He stated that our Hindu view of life is an integral view of life and that
it is our duty to unite the world. As a people, he said, we must be strong to
serve humanity. To accomplish these goals, he stressed, we must continue to
develop our teamwork, cooperation, and discipline. As much a place of
inspiration Keshav Smruti is expected to become, he stressed that it will
remain secondary to the Hindu heart and the Hindu home.
Shri B. P. Shinghal, retired Director General of Police in India and the
younger brother of Shri Ashok Singhal of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, talked
briefly of his experiences with his brother and other swayamsevaks. He gave
examples of unselfishness of the swayamsevaks, those who have volunteered to
do service.
Dr. Bhisma Agnihotri, Dean of South Louisiana College of Law and
Sarsanghchalak of Hindu Swayamseval Sangh of America (HSS) was also an
invited guest and emphasized the significance of such a meeting place to
Hindus in America in fulfilling their responsibilities.
Keshav Smruti includes a 2000 square foot hall which can accomodate 150
persons dedicated to the memory of the late Madhukar (Balasaheb) Deoras,
the third Sarsanghchalak of RSS. His leadership in removing the stigma of
untouchability and other inequalities and injustice in Hinduism continues
to be an inspiration to Hindus throughout the world who are striving to
bring about social justice.
Keshav Smruti has been built to provide an office and meeting place for Hindu
Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS). It will also serve as a place for youngsters to
attend shakhas and learn and practice the Hindu way of life and a place where
high school and college-age youth can meet to share ideas and work on
projects of benefit to the community. The Madhukar Hall will also be used
for yoga workshops (through VHP and Vivekanada Yoga Kendra), HSS-sponsored
lectures and discourses by Hindu sants and community workers.
The dedication and committment of local swayamsevaks who spend many hours in
service to the Hindu community and especially its youth have made such a hall
possible. These volunteers, working through the Hindu Swayamseval Sangh and
Vishwa Hindu Parishad, will be able to continue and expand their community
service programs with these new facilities in Houston, the first such HSS
facilities in North America.
