Re: ARTICLE : Parallels/Divergences (Was Re: ARTICLE : Just say no...)

Virginia,

I recognize the post because it was sent to me. I'll refrain the
mentioning the persons name. But the clearly are not of Indian descent
and certainly do not respect or like neither Hinduism nor Buddhism. Even
Indian Christians, for all of their volitility in this country, would not
write such religious blasphemy on a relgion forum.

They are clearly arguing the academic point of view, respect only American
academia, and slandar everything else. Perhaps the said person is
attempting to convert us to their enlightened point of view, IDK.

: I am not a Hindu nor a scholar/teacher of any faith, but I am deeply
: interested in spiritual questions and in the ways that various religious
: traditions have sought truth and devised ways to live in relationship to
: God. So, I was disturbed to read the post below, which claims to speak for
: many faiths, while misrepresenting them all (to the best of my
: understanding.)

O yes, and they apparently don't know that there are (personnal estimate)
two to three times as many people claiming to be Buddhist at there are
people claiming to be Hindu. That's one heck of a dependant religion.

: Jews among the Hellenes might have accepted Christianity more readily
: because of cultural conditions which made the one path more attractive
: than traditional Judaism. Similarly I believe that many may have
: accepted Buddhism in part because of cultural conditions which made it
: seem more attractive than Hinduism.

On the contrary. Buddhism was a major religion / denonmination, if not
the dominant one for over a-thousand years. When China and the rest
of Eastern Asia became Buddhist, it supplanted native religions that were
more animistic and polytheistic.

: Hinduism was not working for him and set out on a new path, one which left
: behind most of the Hindus' beliefs about Brahman and his manifestations.

Not quite right, but this isn't the time or place to discuss it. E-mail
me and we can chat more later.

: Still though, I am puzzled by this author's intent. Is the idea to say
: that Buddhism is somehow a branch of Hinduism because it shares some
: beliefs and was born of the same culture?

Like I said before, to enlighten the Heathen mass to the enlightened
teaching of American academia. That's of course, if the American can
actually read. Otherwise you'll just have to believe the pontifications
they spout.

Bests,

Jay
