Thank you for your post. I do not know if maharshhi vedavyAsa
needed to hear it from sanjaya, since sanjaya himself saw all that by the
grace of vyasa (vyAsaprasAdat.h shrutavAn.h SBG 18.75). I do not know if
it is written anywhere that vyAsa had to actually hear sanjaya to know
what went on.
The point of this discussion was, smR^itis are considered inferior
literature, and shrutis are considered superior. Describing the SBG as
smR^iti is therefore is in question.
