Re: ARTICLE : Just say no to "Hinduism" (was Re: ARTICLE : On

Greetings all and Giri,

: I don't need to re-evaluate my statement because the statement
: 'Christ comes from the Greek word....' etc is not by me. I just quoted
: that sentence reportedly said by someone famous. I asked HKS whether he
: felt that statement came from a neo-advaitin, to which he responded.

Sorry, just because that person was famous doesn't make it correct. It
sounds like the game played in the song, "... when you rich they think you
know it all." Dhriharastra and Karna were famous - were they right.

: Can I assume from your statements above that you wouldn't trust
: Ramakrishna or Prabhupada [two arbitary examples] when they talk
: about Christ and Christianity ? [I am not saying that you should trust
: them or not].

Now that's an entirely different matter. While I don't know Prabhupada, I
believe Sri Ramakrishna was an incarnation of God. While I don't worship
him, I respect him.  Many others believe Ramakrishna is only a saint;
others are unsure. Even so, Ramakrishna was mostly mute on opinion of
Jesus or Christianity. While I respect Jesus as an avatar, I do not
worship him. Further, I do not respect most forms of Christianity nor do
I respect most Christians because they do not try to obey the Bible nor do
they want to try to obey the Bible.

It was also mentioned in an earlier post that not all division of Hinduism
respect the vedas, puranas, upanishads, or epics or the gods enclosed
therein. The writer wanted a "definition" of Hinduism that would include
these people also. They specified Buddhist, Jains, and one other group.
I have never known a Buddhist to call themselves Hindu. The few Jains I
have known have called themselves Jain and not Hindu also. IMO, in order
to be considered Hindu, you must first call yourself Hindu, on the census
form if nothing else. Hence, the definition still stands: Hinduism is the
faith based upon the vedas, puranas, upanishads, and epic, and their gods
enclosed therin. In all reality, how much respect does a Buddhist have
for a swami versus and Buddhist priest versus a priest or preacher of any
other religion? The swami falls to be equal to anyone else, not even a
quarter step higher than a Rabbi or Christian preacher.

Bests,

Jay
