My goal as a Hindu is to secure everlasting happiness. That means
that I will have to transcend the sorrows of everyday life. I
cannot transcend these sorrows without giving up attachment to
the joys of the senses too, since all sensual pleasures are
transient and attachment to them will give rise to sorrow when they
disappear. To develop the necessary detachment, I will have to give
up my ego, and realize that I am not just this body and mind, but
in actuality I am an infinite being not bound by time or space.
Realizing thus that the bouquets and brickbats that the world hands
to me are just as meaningless as dream episodes, I will let each
pass by me without affecting my deep conviction of my own divinity.
Then I will no longer miss the sensual joys I sought earlier, since
it will be replaced by the joy of union with the divine. Even death
will not touch me then.
