Barry,
Namaste.
There are various interpretations about why Hindu Women and also men put a dot

on the forehead.
I will give a concept related to energy.
People have positive and negative energies.
If a person wants to follow his Dharma and reach moksha, one of the essential
things is he/she is supposed to be chaste and devoid of immoral/sexual
thoughts.
Thoughts may turn into action(result of energy) if it is given an opportunity.
(time, place and many external variables).
When a man sees a women, there is a chance that he may exchange a sexual
thought.
But if there is a Bindu on her forehead, his eyes get attracted to bindu and
doesn't wander anywhere else.(a very good possibility, if he is not too
sensual).
His energy is being shielded by a women's bindu.
(The percentage of rapes/sexual assaults commited in India are very less when
compared to other counries. (take population into account while calculating
percentages)).
In a way you are stoping negative energy.
