Well, for starters, it's more appropriate and definitely respectful to
refer to Kali as "She" or "Her", not "it"; Kali is not a metaphorical
image for some pious quality or what-not, but an eternal form of almighty
God (Bhagwan).

Yes, Kali has what many consider to be a frightening appearance. But,
let us remember that Kali is Divine and Her form is therefore Divine.
Ram Krishn Paramhans was often observed by his devotees shedding tears of
love and absorbed in deep bhao of his Divine darshan beholding the form
of Kali.. He would refer to Her as his "beautiful and loving Divine
Mother". Moral: We should not apply our extremely limited material
intellects to understanding the Divine greatness of God and His many
forms.

I am a devotee of Radha Krishn, so I am afraid I don't know much of the
details of Kali. I have read, I believe, that her main 'power' is that
of creation, and not of destruction. Shiva is typically perceived as the
God of Destruction (and also King of the Yogis).

I hope this helps :-)
