REQUEST : Religion and corruption in Indian society

Hi all:

I have been wondering about this topic for a while. Why is Indian
society so corrupt - morally? Why can (a majority of) people no longer
tell the difference between right and wrong?

In a country where the majority religion so emphatically states that
materialistic pursuits are not important, why has the exact opposite
happened? Is it because the morals, values and ethics taught in the
scriptures (of Hinduism) no longer make sense to most people? Has
Hinduism become so esoteric that the common man cannot understand
anything but the most ritualistic parts?

I am especially concerned that religions with almost no philosophical
underpinnings have succeeded in creating societies that are much better
to live in!

Any thoughts on these issues appreciated.

Srinivas
