I dispute this. Our religion, the way I have understood it gives me the
absolute and total freedom to create wealth, power etc. What it warns
against is the state of being slave to your senses and thus to the 5
vices. Instead it advises mankind to gain complete mastery over them.
Our ancient greetings of Vijayee-bhav, tejasvee-bhav etc are prime
evidence to me that current understanding has gone astray. Religion is
used as an excuse for doing nothing or rejected for irresponsible self-
gratification.
Living without materialism - how is that possible in a relative world??

I think it is basic misunderstanding of Hinduism, but then non-
retualistic Hinduism was never really a religion for the masses.

Probably because Hinduism does not cater for masses who need a guide
whereas Hinduism urges one to be one's own guide for which self inquiry
is a pre-requisite and which in turn relies on the intellect.
