The last thing Hinduism needs at this juncture is misinformed,
destructive apologetics based on a modern sense of shame at
what traditional Hindus have long practiced. David Frawley's
largely erroneous articles are a perfect example of what we
modern Hindus need to eschew and fight against.
The beauty and diversity of our ancient religious practices
are what is at risk; in a misguided attempt to correct Western
perceptions of Hindu beliefs, Mr. Frawley subverts many of
the core traditions of the diverse Hindu population by unconsciously
succumbing to interpreting Hindu beliefs purely in Western
terms. This trend will only lead to the degradation of the
depth of our core Hindu values and beliefs.
I am taken aback that our learned editor, Sri Ajay Shah, has
chosen to endorse Mr. Frawley's unlearned critiques and has
decided to repropagate them with the stamp of approval of the
GHEN. A Muslim gentleman has already pointed out one glaring
misconception of Islam propagated by Mr. Frawley; any reader
who has been following our discussion of idol worship will
immediately notice the many false generalizations concerning
Hindu attitudes toward image worship.
Let us go back to our authentic core beliefs, unhampered by
revisionist approaches at reconstructing and recooking them
to make them palatable to a vague and ever-changing sense of
modernity. Let us champion our own practices, whether they
be the worship of an image as a true manifestation of God,
our tradition of mystic erotic poetry, or the many varieties
of Hindu worship from theism to polytheism by studying them
in their pristine state and appreciating them for what they
really are.
