Oh, how it really is a small world after all - the activities of the
Texas chapter of the VHP of America are being relayed to us by someone
in India...

To inject some meaning into these numbers, 704 children were supported
in 1996 by this program. For the sake of argument, let's assume that
all of the money involved came from America (though I doubt it). The
cost of supporting each child is $250, which puts the total for 1996
at about $176,000.

Granted, that's not an insignificant sum, but even if we assume that
all of the money came from the US, that means that the VHPA donated
less to this program as a whole than some of its members undoubtedly
spent for their daughters' weddings.

Furthermore, if only 704 tribal children throughout India are getting
help from this program, why should anyone complain when the Christian
missionaries make inroads into tribal villages? After all, it's
probably not a coincidence that these numbers got posted after the
discussion about tribals and conversion, and the article that started
the discussion was directed against the Christian missionaries.
