Another way of warding off the evil eye is
to put a small black dot on the child's cheek.
This represents a nominal blemish on the child's
otherwise perfect face, which is believed to ward
off the evil eye. The black dot is typically made
out of collyrium ("kaajal" in Hindi, "anjana" in
Sanskrit, "mai" in a South Indian tongue).
On the other hand, the string could be tied around
the child's ankle, which should not pose any safety
problem, right?
