It seems to me that the only thing that makes an action bad
is that it hurts human relationships. ie., if I am on a tropical
island and pick a fruit off a tree that belongs to no one,
nobody is going to say that I sinned. But if the tree belongs
to someone else, I sinned. Why? Because the person who owns the
tree is upset. He was going to trade that apple for something
else he wanted. So, the reason taking that apple from his tree
was bad is because now there is animosity between him and me.
One might say that the reason it is bad is because I did not
work to get that apple, but I don't think that is fair, because
I also worked to get that apple from the tree which belonged to
nobody (I had to walk to the tree, the go up the tree, and pick
the fruit off the tree).
I would love to hear what a hindu's definition of sin is (that
is, what makes an action intrinsically sinful). If there is a
web page which explains the hindu position, please point me
to it.
God bless all men of good will.
