REQUEST: pain rituals

I recently saw a documentery concerning pain rituals. I am interested in
the one I saw concerning Hinduism. On the "god's" feast day people
participate in a procession, in which men and woman put fish hooks or
large pins in their flesh. there support team put ash on them. They
enter the temple and hooks etc. are removed.
What ritual is this? Which deity do they do it for?
I would like to a paper on this for a class - so all help is welcomed.
