Hands on Atlanta
Greetings from Georgia Tech!!!
Our most recent Hands on Atlanta project involved a trip to the Samaritan
House. This home offers assistance to homeless individuals who are
interested in finding employment. The Samaritan House provides these
people with clothes, a place to take showers, and assistance with filling out
job applications or resumes. The Samaritan House is willing to help these
people on the condition that they are sincerely interested in
obtaining jobs. In order to verify that they are doing this, the
coordinators of the Samaritan House asks each of them to turn
in at least 15 job applications each week.
Our HSC chapter was specifically involved with a sub-project of the
Samaritan House, where we helped build (we measured, cut and put up sheet
rock for the bedrooms) a transitional home for those who had just
located a job. Because they have only recently obtained their jobs,
these individuals do not have the financial resources to begin living
on their own. The Samaritan House is providing these individuals with
this temporary shelter (1-2 months) in order to allow them to gain some
financial stability before moving out and living independently.
Once again, our group seemed to enjoy participating in this
volunteer work and found it to be a rewarding experience.
Peace,
Jayati
