According to what I heard, the Gayatri mantra is what Lord Brahma heard prior
to creating the world. He was meditating prior to the creation in order to
figure out what to do, and what he heard was the music from Lord Krishna's
flute. This music is supposed to be the Gayatri mantra.
You might want to check out Swami Mukhyananda's _Om and The Significance of
The Gayatri Mantra_. This book gives a word-for-word translation of the
mantra, and also describes the details of performing the Sandhya Upasana.
However, Swami M. is an Advaitist, so you might want to take some of his
translations with a grain of salt.
