****************In response to your questions:
In Hinduism, we don't have a real, official sacred text. All the basic
Hindu philosophies and myths are based on a set of scriptures called the
Vedas. From the Vedas, numerous Hindu texts and scriptures are based on
this (ex. Upanishads). In addition, there are numerous sculptures
portraying the life of Krishna. But these were not made during his time,
perhaps, more likely, in the days around the birth of Christ. But
Krishna, was definitely born before Jesus. The Mahabharata War (where
Krishna took part in) took place over a thousand years before Christ.
In terms of the number of practicing Hindus, there are a huge number.
There are a number of Hindus in North America (U.S and Canada), Europe
(primarily in Great Britain) and of course in South Asia (India,
Pakistan,etc.)
Finally, you asked about Krishna and Buddha being the central figures
in the Hindu religion. Buddha is the central figure in Buddhism. But
Buddha has his roots in Hindu mythology. Vishnu, one of the main gods in
Hindu mythology, is believed to have ten avatars, or incarnations.
Krishna is the eighth avatar of Vishnu. Buddha is believed to be the
ninth. But he is not considered a part of Hinduism because his teachings
are pretty different from the philosophies of the Hindu religion.
