TAXILA ACADEMY
Taxila Academy is a summer program in Indian Studies, set in Bangalore,=20
and intended for students in high school and college. The program=20
accommodates thirty-five students from North America, Europe and India.=20
In 1996, the program will be held from July 3 to August 11.
Taxila Academy is intended to provide students a structured introduction=20
to present-day India through the framework of its indigenous learning.=20
It provides an environment where students from around the world may=20
explore India=B9s knowledge systems.
CURRICULUM
Students at Taxila Academy choose two seminars from the following=20
selection and then attend classes and do research in those fields. In=20
addition, they participate in special lectures, performances and field=20
trips. These experiences complement one another to generate questions=20
and discussion, enabling students to gain deep insights into India=B9s=20
traditions in a short time.

FACULTY
ARINDAM CHAKRABARTY is Professor of Philosophy at Delhi University. He=20
is an authority on the Nyaya School of Indian Logic, as well as British=20
Philosophy of Mind. On the program Professor Chakrabarty will teach=20
music and ethics.
ANANYA VAJPEYI is a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. She is the Academic=20
Director of the program and is interested in alternative education. She=20
will teach literary history and linguistic approaches to culture.
KAPIL KAPOOR is Associate Professor at the Center for Linguistics and=20
English at Jawaharlal Nehru University. Dr. Kapoor does research in=20
Semiotics and teaches North Indian Languages and Poetics.
ADITI JAITLEY teaches Bharatnatyam at the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya. She=20
has experimented with intercultural and multimedia performances and will=20
teach dance, drama and their appreciation.
PRAHLADACARYA is Professor of Sanskrit at Bangalore University and=20
Director of Bangalore=B9s Purnaprajna Vidyapeetham. He is an authority on=
=20
Vedanta and is interested in comparative educational methodology.=20
ADITYA DEV SOOD is a Century Fellow at the University of Chicago=B9s=20
Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations. He serves as=20
Program Director and teaches Indian literature, art and architecture.
CAMPUS LIFE
Taxila Academy is located on an aesthetically landscaped 29 acre campus=20
in Whitefields, on the outskirts of Bangalore. Built in 1963, its modern=20
facilities are surrounded by groves of coconut and palm. It has a=20
library of 11,000 volumes with extensive sections on Indian Literature,=20
Religions, Philosophy, Art and Politics. It also has classrooms, a large=20
auditorium, a dining hall and a sportsfield.=20
ADMISSIONS PROCESS
Applications will be reviewed from January 15 through March 15, 1996, on=20
a rolling basis. To ensure a place on the program please apply early.
