Dear Narahariji:
Thank you for raising the issue. I have heard that this person (A.M.) is
half Indian (Kerala) and half Italian. This was probably his forst foray
into Hinduism. Anyway, I was similarly upset with the Mahabharata by
Peter Brooks. In that rendition, he did not think that our ancestors
were good enough to have fancy weapons, so he made Bhisma ride a bamboo
stretcher and hurl a bamboo stick for weapon. I felt that he had to put
Arjuna on a chariot, if he could, he probably would make Arjuna walk in
the battleground.
Our Indian english press, of course, saw nothing wrong with that. I have
heard some intellectuals say that Peter Brooks alone was able to bring
out the essence of Mahabharata, and the Hindi telemovie series was a
major failure in that respect. I did ask them for specific points, but
never got any satisfactory answer.
With best regards,
Dhruba.
