REQUEST: Shiva's ows

In the Ramayan Rama breaks Shiva's bow. In the Mahaharat Krishna
breaks another of Shiva's bow. What is the significance of Rama and
Krishna breaking these bows? Leads to any literature on these bows,
however brief, greatly appreciated.
