Well, the breaking of Shiva's bow signifies the obstacles that Shiva has
put on the earth such that only Vishnu is able to overcome them. For
example, at Sita's swayamvar, there were many powerful kings and princes
present among the suitors of Sita and only Rama was able to break that
bow. Without breaking that bow, Sita would not be married to Rama and
without her being married to Rama, there would be no destruction of
Ravana. Although I am not familiar with Krishna breaking Shiva's bow, I
am sure this signifies the same. Anyway, these show a unique chapter in
mythology when Shiva and Vishnu work together so that it is ensured that
Vishnu is able to sustain the world from evil.
